Go to actions, then options, and then interest and starving filter and make sure it's disabled.

If you get a message stating your population is starving then you need to buy food. Pop will consume food until it gets to 10,000 at which point they no longer need it. If you start a new kingdom, then 2 million food will always suffice untless the population is destroyed in some way (commonly only done by actually taking the kingdom by force).

If on the other hand you get a message stating your kingdom doesn't sustain then you need to make sure it has at least 10 billion worth of gold between all of its assets (For example, having 2 bil in each army and food will be exactly 10b). A kingdom that doesn't sustain will lose as much as 24% moral every 48 hours.

The main thing is having enough food, as RF said a few million will do, at 10k it starts making it's own food. I usually put 50% morale in my kds as if someone wants to coup it they can bribe it down to there anyway. As for 10b assets, you can do that if you want, if you only have a single kd and you're on enough, as long as it's run at least once every 24 hours it won't lose morale (this means it cannot have a period in excess of 24 hours where noone ran it), it won't lose any morale. A guard isn't really necessary, if someone is killing your guard a lot to try and coup it, just put a few runes in it, this dramatically decreases the amount of morale lost to killed guards, and has more benefit than just buying a guard. As well as this, you can reclaim this gold for later use if needed.

Mostly, the only people who kill guards are noobs, so throwing in a high-end guard would stop them getting your morale down. The only way a high-end player would take out your guard usually is if they were extremely bored, or a beast spawned in your kingdom.

Runes do decrease the amount your morale drops by though, so that's always a bonus... Oh, and note: Beast guards are NOT as strong as 1b guards (Almighty Avatar, Templar of Light [I think... Sky 1b monster], Yoro La HiHi Samurai, Owner of Infinite Darkness, Satan).

However, the 10b gold thing... I'm pretty sure that the Guard is not included in this. Runes, good, armies and fortifications are. I don't know about Trs. But I'd recommend if you have to build a kingdom, get 50b and make a kingdom then. You can max everything out and still have about 15 runes left over.

Maxing a kingdom out with gold is a pretty bad idea unless you're really cashed up and lazy as all hell, you can invest a portion of that and then run it up saving yourself gold that can either be used for other things or invested instead of runes, creating a far stronger defense.

i would advise, unless you have high kingmanship, and the time and energy to walk it up, to either seed it with full armies and 1b in all forts, or just max it. also, i would advise doing at least a 4x4 when starting out. however, either way you go, watch out for those that like to pick on noobs and wipe out what they have. there are some that just walk surface looking for those plexs.
one more thing, if you are just starting out, turn off your kd colors. its under options. (if you didnt already know that) it will make it harder for others to find your kds.

Even if you have 0 kingmanship, you can get an alleg suit to boost it up to 80, which is high enough to make it worth running up assets.
